Tao Te Ching 31.1

夫佳兵者，不祥之器，物或惡之，故有道者不處。君子居則貴左，用兵則貴右。兵者不祥之器，非君子之器，不得已而用之，恬淡為上。勝而不美，而美之者，是樂殺人。夫樂殺人者，則不可以得志於天下矣。吉事尚左，凶事尚右。偏將軍居左，上將軍居右。言以喪禮處之。殺人之衆，以悲哀泣之，戰勝以喪禮處之。

fu jia bing zhe, bu xiang zhi qi, wu huo wu zhi, gu you dao zhe bu chu. jun zi ju ze gui zuo, yong bing ze gui you. bing zhe bu xiang zhi qi, fei jun zi zhi qi, bu de yi er yong zhi, tian dan wei shang. sheng er bu mei, er mei zhi zhe, shi le sha ren. fu le sha ren zhe, ze bu ke yi de zhi yu tian xia yi. ji shi shang zuo, xiong shi shang you. pian jiang jun ju zuo, shang jiang jun ju you. yan yi sang li chu zhi. sha ren zhi zhong, yi bei ai qi zhi, zhan sheng yi sang li chu zhi.

Fine weapons are instruments of ill omen; all creatures detest them. Therefore the follower of the Tao does not rely on them. The gentleman in peacetime values the left; in war he values the right. Weapons are instruments of ill omen, not the instruments of the gentleman. When he has no choice but to use them, calm detachment is best. Victory is not beautiful, and those who call it beautiful delight in the slaughter of people. Those who delight in slaughter cannot achieve their purpose in the world. In auspicious affairs, the left is honoured. In affairs of mourning, the right is honoured. The lieutenant general stands on the left; the supreme general stands on the right — that is, they are arranged as at a funeral. When great numbers have been killed, one should weep with sorrow. A victory in battle should be observed with funeral rites.

सुंदर शस्त्र अपशकुन के उपकरण हैं; सब जीव इनसे घृणा करते हैं — इसलिए दाओ को धारण करने वाला इनमें नहीं रहता। सज्जन शांति काल में बाईं ओर को मूल्य देता है; युद्ध में दाईं ओर को। शस्त्र अपशकुन के उपकरण हैं, सज्जन के उपकरण नहीं; जब विवशतावश उठाने पड़ें, तब शांत अनासक्ति ही श्रेष्ठ है। विजय भी सुंदर नहीं; जो इसे सुंदर कहते हैं वे मनुष्य-वध का आनंद लेते हैं — और मनुष्य-वध का आनंद लेने वाले संसार में अपना प्रयोजन कभी सिद्ध नहीं कर सकते। शुभ अवसरों पर बाईं ओर सम्मानित; अशुभ अवसरों पर दाईं ओर सम्मानित। उप-सेनापति बाईं ओर; प्रधान-सेनापति दाईं ओर — अर्थात् वे शोक-विधि के अनुसार स्थित हैं। असंख्य मारे गए हों तो विलाप और अश्रु से शोक करो; युद्ध-विजय को शोक-विधि के अनुसार मनाओ।
