Tao Te Ching 34.1

大道氾兮，其可左右。萬物恃之而生而不辭，功成不名有。衣養萬物而不為主，常無欲，可名於小；萬物歸焉而不為主，可名為大。以其終不自為大，故能成其大。

da dao fan xi, qi ke zuo you. wan wu shi zhi er sheng er bu ci, gong cheng bu ming you. yi yang wan wu er bu wei zhu, chang wu yu, ke ming yu xiao; wan wu gui yan er bu wei zhu, ke ming wei da. yi qi zhong bu zi wei da, gu neng cheng qi da.

The great Tao flows everywhere, both left and right. All things depend on it for life, and it does not refuse them. It accomplishes its work but does not claim a name for it. It clothes and nourishes all things but does not act as their master. Being forever without desire, it can be called small. All things return to it, yet it does not act as their master — it can be called great. Because it never considers itself great, it is able to achieve greatness.

महान दाओ सर्वत्र बहता है, बाएँ और दाएँ दोनों ओर। समस्त जीव उसी पर आश्रित होकर जन्म लेते हैं, और वह किसी को अस्वीकार नहीं करता। वह कार्य पूर्ण करता है पर नाम का दावा नहीं करता। वह समस्त जीवों को वस्त्र देता, पालता है पर स्वामी नहीं बनता; सदा कामना-रहित — इसलिए उसे छोटा कहा जा सकता है। समस्त जीव उसी में लौट जाते हैं पर वह स्वामी नहीं बनता — इसलिए उसे महान कहा जा सकता है। और चूँकि वह स्वयं को कभी महान नहीं मानता, इसीलिए वह अपनी महानता सिद्ध कर लेता है।
