Tao Te Ching 4.1

道沖而用之或不盈。淵兮，似萬物之宗。挫其銳，解其紛，和其光，同其塵。湛兮，似或存。吾不知誰之子，象帝之先。

dao chong er yong zhi huo bu ying. yuan xi, si wan wu zhi zong. cuo qi rui, jie qi fen, he qi guang, tong qi chen. zhan xi, si huo cun. wu bu zhi shui zhi zi, xiang di zhi xian.

The Tao is like an empty vessel; it is used but never filled. Fathomless, it seems to be the ancestor of all things. It blunts sharpness, unties tangles, softens glare, and settles dust. Deep and still, it seems barely to exist. I do not know whose child it is — it appears to have existed before the Lord of Heaven.

दाओ रिक्त पात्र के समान है; काम में आता है पर कभी भरता नहीं। अथाह — मानो समस्त वस्तुओं का पूर्वज हो। वह तीक्ष्णता को कुंद करता है, उलझन को सुलझाता है, तेज को मृदु करता है, धूल में सम्मिलित हो जाता है। निश्चल और गूढ़ — मानो कदाचित् अस्तित्व में हो। मैं नहीं जानता यह किसकी संतान है — यह तो स्वर्ग के स्वामी से भी पहले का प्रतीत होता है।
