Tao Te Ching 5.1

天地不仁，以萬物為芻狗；聖人不仁，以百姓為芻狗。天地之間，其猶橐籥乎？虛而不屈，動而愈出。多言數窮，不如守中。

tian di bu ren, yi wan wu wei chu gou; sheng ren bu ren, yi bai xing wei chu gou. tian di zhi jian, qi you tuo yue hu? xu er bu qu, dong er yu chu. duo yan shu qiong, bu ru shou zhong.

Heaven and earth are not partial to kindness; they treat all things as straw dogs. The sage is not partial to kindness; he treats all people as straw dogs. The space between heaven and earth — is it not like a bellows? Empty, yet it does not collapse; the more it moves, the more it produces. Excessive words lead to exhaustion; it is better to hold fast to the centre.

आकाश और पृथ्वी करुणा-निष्पक्ष हैं; वे समस्त जीवों को पुआल के कुत्तों के समान मानते हैं। संत भी करुणा-निष्पक्ष है; वह सौ कुलों को पुआल के कुत्तों के समान मानता है। आकाश और पृथ्वी के बीच का अवकाश — क्या वह धौंकनी के समान नहीं है? रिक्त है पर सिकुड़ता नहीं; जितना चलता है उतना ही उत्पन्न करता है। अधिक बोलने से शक्ति चुक जाती है; मध्य को पकड़े रहना ही श्रेयस्कर है।
