Tao Te Ching 51.1

The Tao gives birth to them. Virtue nourishes them. Matter gives them form. Circumstances complete them. Therefore the ten thousand things all revere the Tao and honor virtue. The Tao is revered and virtue is honored not because anyone commands it, but because it is natural. So the Tao gives birth to them, nourishes them, raises them, nurtures them, shelters them, supports them, sustains them, and protects them. It gives birth but does not possess. It acts but does not take credit. It leads but does not dominate. This is called the mysterious virtue.
