Tao Te Ching 52.1

天下有始，以為天下母。既得其母，以知其子；既知其子，復守其母，沒身不殆。塞其兌，閉其門，終身不勤。開其兌，濟其事，終身不救。見小曰明，守柔曰強。用其光，復歸其明，無遺身殃，是為習常。

tian xia you shi, yi wei tian xia mu. ji de qi mu, yi zhi qi zi; ji zhi qi zi, fu shou qi mu, mo shen bu dai. sai qi dui, bi qi men, zhong shen bu qin. kai qi dui, ji qi shi, zhong shen bu jiu. jian xiao yue ming, shou rou yue qiang. yong qi guang, fu gui qi ming, wu yi shen yang, shi wei xi chang.

The world has a beginning, which we may regard as the mother of the world. Having found the mother, we may know her children. Having known the children, return and hold fast to the mother, and to the end of your days you will be free from danger. Block the openings, shut the doors, and to the end of your life you will not be troubled. Open the openings, meddle with affairs, and to the end of your life you will not be saved. Seeing the small is called clarity. Holding to the yielding is called strength. Use the outer light, return to the inner light, and you will be spared from harm. This is called practicing the eternal.

संसार का एक आदि है; उसे संसार की माता माना जा सकता है। माता को पा लो, तो उसके पुत्रों को जान लो; पुत्रों को जानकर फिर माता को धारण करो, तो जीवन भर कोई विपत्ति नहीं। मुख बंद कर, द्वार बंद कर — जीवन भर कोई कष्ट नहीं। मुख खोल, काम-काज में उलझो — जीवन भर कोई बचाव नहीं। सूक्ष्म को देखना प्रज्ञा है; कोमलता को धारण करना बल है। बाह्य प्रकाश का उपयोग कर, भीतरी प्रकाश में लौट — तो शरीर पर विपत्ति न आएगी। इसी को शाश्वत का अभ्यास कहते हैं।
