Tao Te Ching 53.1

使我介然有知，行於大道，唯施是畏。大道甚夷，而人好徑。朝甚除，田甚蕪，倉甚虛，服文綵，帶利劍，厭飲食，財貨有餘，是謂盜夸。非道也哉！

shi wo jie ran you zhi, xing yu da dao, wei shi shi wei. da dao shen yi, er ren hao jing. chao shen chu, tian shen wu, cang shen xu, fu wen cai, dai li jian, yan yin shi, cai huo you yu, shi wei dao kua. fei dao ye zai!

If I have even a little understanding, I would walk on the great way, and my only fear would be of straying from it. The great way is very smooth, but people love the bypaths. When the court is splendid, the fields are full of weeds and the granaries are empty. To wear fine clothes, carry sharp swords, gorge oneself with food and drink, and have more wealth than one can use — this is the boasting of robbers. It is certainly not the way.

यदि मुझे थोड़ा-सा भी ज्ञान हो और मैं महान मार्ग पर चलूँ, तो मेरा एकमात्र भय भटकने का होगा। महान मार्ग बहुत समतल है, पर लोगों को पगडंडियाँ प्रिय हैं। दरबार भव्य है, खेत खरपतवार से भरे हैं, कोठार रिक्त हैं; रंगीन वस्त्र धारण, पैनी तलवार कमर में, भोजन-पान से तृप्त, संपत्ति आवश्यकता से अधिक — यही तो डकैतों की डींग है! यह निश्चय ही दाओ नहीं है।
