Tao Te Ching 55.1

含德之厚，比於赤子。毒蟲不螫，猛獸不據，攫鳥不搏。骨弱筋柔而握固。未知牝牡之合而朘作，精之至也。終日號而不嗄，和之至也。知和曰常，知常曰明，益生曰祥，心使氣曰強。物壯則老，謂之不道，不道早已。

han de zhi hou, bi yu chi zi. du chong bu shi, meng shou bu ju, jue niao bu bo. gu ruo jin rou er wo gu. wei zhi pin mu zhi he er zui zuo, jing zhi zhi ye. zhong ri hao er bu a, he zhi zhi ye. zhi he yue chang, zhi chang yue ming, yi sheng yue xiang, xin shi qi yue qiang. wu zhuang ze lao, wei zhi bu dao, bu dao zao yi.

One who is filled with virtue is like a newborn infant. Poisonous insects will not sting it. Fierce beasts will not seize it. Birds of prey will not strike it. Its bones are soft and its sinews are tender, yet its grip is firm. It does not yet know the union of male and female, yet its vital force is complete — its essence is at its peak. It cries all day without becoming hoarse — its harmony is at its peak. Knowing harmony is called constancy. Knowing constancy is called clarity. Forcing life to increase is called ill-omened. When the mind commands the vital breath, it is called force. When things reach their prime they begin to age. This is called departing from the Tao. What departs from the Tao perishes early.

जिसमें गुण की प्रचुरता है वह नवजात शिशु के समान है। विषैले कीड़े उसे नहीं डसते; हिंस्र पशु उसे नहीं पकड़ते; शिकारी पक्षी उस पर आक्रमण नहीं करते। उसकी हड्डियाँ कोमल और नसें मृदु हैं, फिर भी उसकी पकड़ दृढ़ है। वह अभी स्त्री-पुरुष के मिलन को नहीं जानता, फिर भी उसकी प्राण-शक्ति पूर्ण है — उसका वीर्य अपनी पराकाष्ठा पर है। वह पूरे दिन रोता है पर उसका कंठ नहीं बैठता — उसका सामंजस्य अपनी पराकाष्ठा पर है। सामंजस्य को जानना शाश्वत कहलाता है; शाश्वत को जानना प्रज्ञा कहलाती है। जीवन को ज़बरदस्ती बढ़ाना अपशकुन है; जब मन प्राण-श्वास पर शासन करता है, उसे बल कहते हैं। वस्तुएँ चरम पर पहुँचकर जीर्ण होने लगती हैं — इसे 'दाओ से विमुख' कहते हैं; जो दाओ से विमुख है वह शीघ्र नष्ट हो जाता है।
