Tao Te Ching 58.1

其政悶悶，其民淳淳；其政察察，其民缺缺。禍兮福之所倚，福兮禍之所伏。孰知其極？其無正也。正復為奇，善復為妖。人之迷，其日固久。是以聖人方而不割，廉而不劌，直而不肆，光而不耀。

qi zheng men men, qi min chun chun; qi zheng cha cha, qi min que que. huo xi fu zhi suo yi, fu xi huo zhi suo fu. shu zhi qi ji? qi wu zheng ye. zheng fu wei qi, shan fu wei yao. ren zhi mi, qi ri gu jiu. shi yi sheng ren fang er bu ge, lian er bu gui, zhi er bu si, guang er bu yao.

When the government is dull and unobtrusive, the people are honest and simple. When the government is searching and severe, the people are cunning and discontented. Misfortune is what fortune leans upon. Fortune is what misfortune hides within. Who knows where this will end? There is no fixed standard. What is correct becomes strange. What is good becomes monstrous. The delusion of the people has indeed lasted a long time. Therefore the sage is square but does not cut, angular but does not wound, straight but does not impose, bright but does not dazzle.

जब शासन मंद और अन-आग्रही होता है, तब प्रजा सरल और सच्ची होती है; जब शासन तीक्ष्ण और छिद्रान्वेषी होता है, तब प्रजा कुटिल और असंतुष्ट होती है। विपत्ति पर सौभाग्य टिका है; सौभाग्य के भीतर विपत्ति छिपी है। कौन जाने इसका अंत कहाँ? कोई स्थिर मानक नहीं। जो उचित है वह विचित्र हो जाता है; जो शुभ है वह अशुभ हो जाता है। मनुष्य का भ्रम वास्तव में बहुत पुराना है। इसलिए संत चौकोर होता है पर काटता नहीं; कोनेदार होता है पर घाव नहीं करता; सीधा होता है पर थोपता नहीं; देदीप्यमान होता है पर चकाचौंध नहीं करता।
