Tao Te Ching 59.1

治人事天，莫若嗇。夫唯嗇，是謂早服；早服謂之重積德；重積德則無不克；無不克則莫知其極；莫知其極，可以有國；有國之母，可以長久。是謂深根固柢，長生久視之道。

zhi ren shi tian, mo ruo se. fu wei se, shi wei zao fu; zao fu wei zhi zhong ji de; zhong ji de ze wu bu ke; wu bu ke ze mo zhi qi ji; mo zhi qi ji, ke yi you guo; you guo zhi mu, ke yi chang jiu. shi wei shen gen gu di, chang sheng jiu shi zhi dao.

In governing people and serving heaven, nothing is better than moderation. Moderation means returning to the way early. Returning early means accumulating abundant virtue. When virtue is abundantly accumulated, nothing cannot be overcome. When nothing cannot be overcome, no one knows the limits of your ability. When no one knows your limits, you can possess the country. Possessing the mother of the country, you can endure long. This is called having deep roots and a firm foundation, the way of long life and enduring vision.

मनुष्यों का शासन और आकाश की सेवा — इन दोनों में मितव्ययिता से बढ़कर कुछ नहीं। मितव्ययिता का अर्थ है शीघ्र मार्ग पर लौट आना; शीघ्र लौटना गुण के गहन संचय को कहते हैं; गुण का गहन संचय हो तो कुछ भी अजेय नहीं रहता; कुछ भी अजेय न हो तो कोई उसकी सीमा नहीं जान सकता; कोई सीमा न जाने तो वह राष्ट्र को धारण कर सकता है; राष्ट्र की माता को पाकर वह चिरजीवी हो जाता है। इसी को गहन जड़ और दृढ़ नींव, दीर्घ जीवन और चिरंतन दृष्टि का मार्ग कहते हैं।
