Tao Te Ching 67.1

天下皆謂我道大，似不肖。夫唯大，故似不肖。若肖，久矣其細也夫！我有三寶，持而保之。一曰慈，二曰儉，三曰不敢為天下先。慈故能勇，儉故能廣，不敢為天下先，故能成器長。今舍慈且勇，舍儉且廣，舍後且先，死矣！夫慈，以戰則勝，以守則固。天將救之，以慈衛之。

tian xia jie wei wo dao da, si bu xiao. fu wei da, gu si bu xiao. ruo xiao, jiu yi qi xi ye fu! wo you san bao, chi er bao zhi. yi yue ci, er yue jian, san yue bu gan wei tian xia xian. ci gu neng yong, jian gu neng guang, bu gan wei tian xia xian, gu neng cheng qi zhang. jin she ci qie yong, she jian qie guang, she hou qie xian, si yi! fu ci, yi zhan ze sheng, yi shou ze gu. tian jiang jiu zhi, yi ci wei zhi.

Everyone in the world says that my Tao is great and beyond compare. Because it is great, it seems beyond compare. If it could be compared, it would long ago have become small. I have three treasures that I hold and cherish. The first is compassion. The second is frugality. The third is not daring to be first in the world. Through compassion, one becomes brave. Through frugality, one becomes generous. Through not daring to be first, one becomes the leader of all. Now if one is brave without compassion, generous without frugality, or first without humility — that is death. Compassion brings victory in battle and strength in defense. When heaven wants to protect someone, it guards that person with compassion.

समस्त संसार कहता है मेरा दाओ महान है — अतुलनीय प्रतीत होता है। और वह इसीलिए अतुलनीय प्रतीत होता है क्योंकि वह महान है; यदि वह तुलनीय होता, तो कब का सूक्ष्म हो चुका होता! मेरे पास तीन रत्न हैं, जिन्हें मैं धारण और सुरक्षित रखता हूँ। पहला करुणा है; दूसरा मितव्ययिता है; तीसरा है संसार में प्रथम होने का साहस न करना। करुणा से वीरता आती है; मितव्ययिता से विस्तार आता है; प्रथम होने का साहस न करने से वह सबका अगुआ बन जाता है। अब यदि कोई करुणा छोड़कर वीरता खोजे, मितव्ययिता छोड़कर विस्तार खोजे, पीछे रहना छोड़कर आगे हो — वह मृत्यु है! करुणा से युद्ध लड़ो तो विजय, रक्षा करो तो दृढ़ता। आकाश जिसकी रक्षा करना चाहता है, उसे करुणा से आवृत करता है।
