Tao Te Ching 72.1

民不畏威，則大威至。無狎其所居，無厭其所生。夫唯不厭，是以不厭。是以聖人自知不自見，自愛不自貴。故去彼取此。

min bu wei wei, ze da wei zhi. wu xia qi suo ju, wu yan qi suo sheng. fu wei bu yan, shi yi bu yan. shi yi sheng ren zi zhi bu zi jian, zi ai bu zi gui. gu qu bi qu ci.

When the people do not fear authority, a greater authority will descend upon them. Do not confine them in their dwellings. Do not oppress their livelihood. If you do not oppress them, they will not be weary of you. Therefore the sage knows himself but does not display himself. He loves himself but does not exalt himself. He lets go of the outer and takes hold of the inner.

जब प्रजा सत्ता का भय नहीं करती, तब उस पर एक बड़ी सत्ता उतरती है। उन्हें उनके निवास में दबाओ मत; उनकी आजीविका पर दबाव मत डालो। जब तू उन पर दबाव नहीं डालेगा, तब वे तुझसे ऊबेंगे भी नहीं। इसलिए संत स्वयं को जानता है पर स्वयं को दिखाता नहीं; स्वयं से प्रेम करता है पर स्वयं को ऊँचा नहीं उठाता। वह उसे त्याग कर इसे ग्रहण करता है।
