Tao Te Ching 73.1

勇於敢則殺，勇於不敢則活。此兩者，或利或害。天之所惡，孰知其故？是以聖人猶難之。天之道，不爭而善勝，不言而善應，不召而自來，繟然而善謀。天網恢恢，疏而不失。

yong yu gan ze sha, yong yu bu gan ze huo. ci liang zhe, huo li huo hai. tian zhi suo wu, shu zhi qi gu? shi yi sheng ren you nan zhi. tian zhi dao, bu zheng er shan sheng, bu yan er shan ying, bu zhao er zi lai, shan ran er shan mou. tian wang hui hui, shu er bu shi.

Courage in daring leads to death. Courage in not daring leads to life. Of these two, one brings benefit and the other harm. Who knows why heaven dislikes what it dislikes? Even the sage regards this as difficult. The way of heaven does not compete, yet it wins easily. It does not speak, yet it responds well. It does not summon, yet things come of their own accord. It is unhurried, yet it plans well. The net of heaven is cast wide. Though its meshes are coarse, nothing slips through.

दुस्साहस में वीरता मृत्यु की ओर ले जाती है; दुस्साहस न करने में वीरता जीवन की ओर ले जाती है। इन दोनों में एक उपकार है, एक हानि। आकाश को क्या अप्रिय है, इसका कारण कौन जाने? संत भी इसे कठिन मानता है। आकाश का मार्ग — प्रतिस्पर्धा नहीं करता, फिर भी सहज जीतता है; बोलता नहीं, फिर भी भली-भाँति उत्तर देता है; बुलाता नहीं, फिर भी वस्तुएँ स्वयं आ जाती हैं; अनायास चलता है, फिर भी भली-भाँति योजना बनाता है। आकाश का जाल विस्तीर्ण है — फंदे ढीले हैं, पर कुछ नहीं छूटता।
