Tao Te Ching 75.1

民之飢，以其上食稅之多，是以飢。民之難治，以其上之有為，是以難治。民之輕死，以其上求生之厚，是以輕死。夫唯無以生為者，是賢於貴生。

min zhi ji, yi qi shang shi shui zhi duo, shi yi ji. min zhi nan zhi, yi qi shang zhi you wei, shi yi nan zhi. min zhi qing si, yi qi shang qiu sheng zhi hou, shi yi qing si. fu wei wu yi sheng wei zhe, shi xian yu gui sheng.

The people starve because those above consume too much in taxes. That is why they starve. The people are difficult to govern because those above interfere too much. That is why they are difficult to govern. The people take death lightly because those above demand too much of life. That is why they take death lightly. Indeed, those who do not make too much of life are wiser than those who overvalue it.

प्रजा भूखी इसलिए है क्योंकि ऊपर वाले बहुत कर खा जाते हैं — इसीलिए वह भूखी है। प्रजा का शासन कठिन इसलिए है क्योंकि ऊपर वाले बहुत हस्तक्षेप करते हैं — इसीलिए उनका शासन कठिन है। प्रजा मृत्यु को हल्के लेती है इसलिए क्योंकि ऊपर वाले अपने जीवन को अत्यधिक संवर्धित करना चाहते हैं — इसीलिए वह मृत्यु को हल्के लेती है। इसलिए जो जीवन को अत्यधिक कार्य का विषय नहीं बनाते, वे जीवन को अधिक-मूल्य देने वालों से श्रेष्ठ हैं।
