Tao Te Ching 76.1

人之生也柔弱，其死也堅強。草木之生也柔脆，其死也枯槁。故堅強者死之徒，柔弱者生之徒。是以兵強則滅，木強則折。強大處下，柔弱處上。

ren zhi sheng ye rou ruo, qi si ye jian qiang. cao mu zhi sheng ye rou cui, qi si ye ku gao. gu jian qiang zhe si zhi tu, rou ruo zhe sheng zhi tu. shi yi bing qiang ze mie, mu qiang ze zhe. qiang da chu xia, rou ruo chu shang.

When people are born, they are soft and yielding. When they die, they are hard and stiff. When plants are alive, they are soft and tender. When they die, they are dry and brittle. Therefore the hard and stiff are companions of death. The soft and yielding are companions of life. An army that cannot yield will be defeated. A tree that cannot bend will break. The hard and great sink down. The soft and yielding rise above.

जब मनुष्य जन्म लेता है, वह कोमल और लचीला है; जब मरता है, कठोर और अकड़ा हुआ। जब तृण-तरु जीवित हैं, कोमल और मृदु हैं; जब मरते हैं, सूखे और टूटने योग्य हैं। इसलिए कठोर और अकड़ा हुआ मृत्यु का अनुयायी है; कोमल और लचीला जीवन का अनुयायी है। इसीलिए सेना कठोर हो तो नष्ट होती है; वृक्ष कठोर हो तो टूटता है। कठोर और विशाल नीचे बैठते हैं; कोमल और लचीला ऊपर उठते हैं।
