Tao Te Ching 77.1

天之道，其猶張弓歟？高者抑之，下者舉之；有餘者損之，不足者補之。天之道，損有餘而補不足。人之道則不然，損不足以奉有餘。孰能有餘以奉天下？唯有道者。是以聖人為而不恃，功成而不處，其不欲見賢。

tian zhi dao, qi you zhang gong yu? gao zhe yi zhi, xia zhe ju zhi; you yu zhe sun zhi, bu zu zhe bu zhi. tian zhi dao, sun you yu er bu bu zu. ren zhi dao ze bu ran, sun bu zu yi feng you yu. shu neng you yu yi feng tian xia? wei you dao zhe. shi yi sheng ren wei er bu shi, gong cheng er bu chu, qi bu yu jian xian.

The way of heaven — is it not like the bending of a bow? What is high is pressed down. What is low is raised up. What has too much is reduced. What has too little is increased. The way of heaven reduces excess and supplements deficiency. The way of people is not so — they take from those who have too little to give to those who have too much. Who can take from those who have too much and give it to the world? Only one who has the Tao. Therefore the sage acts but does not take credit. He accomplishes his work but does not dwell on it. He has no desire to display his worthiness.

आकाश का मार्ग — क्या वह धनुष को चढ़ाने जैसा नहीं है? जो ऊपर है उसे नीचे दबाया जाता है; जो नीचे है उसे ऊपर उठाया जाता है; जिसके पास अधिक है उससे घटाया जाता है; जिसके पास कम है उसमें जोड़ा जाता है। आकाश का मार्ग अधिक को घटाकर न्यून को पूर्ण करता है। मनुष्यों का मार्ग ऐसा नहीं — वे न्यून से लेकर अधिक वालों को भेंट चढ़ाते हैं। कौन अपने अधिक को संसार को चढ़ा सके? केवल वही जो दाओ को धारण करता है। इसलिए संत क्रिया करता है पर निर्भर नहीं होता; सिद्धि पूरी करता है पर उस पर नहीं टिकता; अपनी योग्यता को प्रदर्शित करने की इच्छा नहीं रखता।
