Tao Te Ching 78.1

天下莫柔弱於水，而攻堅強者莫之能勝，以其無以易之。弱之勝強，柔之勝剛，天下莫不知，莫能行。是以聖人云：受國之垢，是謂社稷主；受國不祥，是為天下王。正言若反。

tian xia mo rou ruo yu shui, er gong jian qiang zhe mo zhi neng sheng, yi qi wu yi yi zhi. ruo zhi sheng qiang, rou zhi sheng gang, tian xia mo bu zhi, mo neng xing. shi yi sheng ren yun: shou guo zhi gou, shi wei she ji zhu; shou guo bu xiang, shi wei tian xia wang. zheng yan ruo fan.

Nothing in the world is softer and weaker than water. Yet for attacking the hard and strong, nothing surpasses it, for there is nothing that can take its place. The weak overcomes the strong. The soft overcomes the hard. Everyone in the world knows this, yet no one can put it into practice. Therefore the sage says: The one who takes upon himself the humiliation of the country is called the lord of the land. The one who takes upon himself the misfortune of the country is called the king of the world. True words seem paradoxical.

संसार में जल से कोमल-दुर्बल कुछ नहीं, फिर भी कठोर-सबल पर आक्रमण में कोई उसे नहीं हरा सकता — क्योंकि कोई उसका स्थान नहीं ले सकता। दुर्बल सबल को जीतता है; कोमल कठोर को जीतता है; संसार में कोई नहीं जो यह न जानता हो, फिर भी कोई नहीं जो इसका पालन कर सके। इसीलिए संत कहता है: जो राष्ट्र की मलिनता को अपने ऊपर ले, वही राज्य-पीठ का स्वामी है; जो राष्ट्र के अशुभ को अपने ऊपर ले, वही संसार का राजा है। सीधे वचन उलटे प्रतीत होते हैं।
