Tao Te Ching 80.1

小國寡民。使有什伯之器而不用；使民重死而不遠徙。雖有舟輿，無所乘之；雖有甲兵，無所陳之。使民復結繩而用之。甘其食，美其服，安其居，樂其俗。鄰國相望，雞犬之聲相聞，民至老死不相往來。

xiao guo gua min. shi you shi bo zhi qi er bu yong; shi min zhong si er bu yuan xi. sui you zhou yu, wu suo cheng zhi; sui you jia bing, wu suo chen zhi. shi min fu jie sheng er yong zhi. gan qi shi, mei qi fu, an qi ju, le qi su. lin guo xiang wang, ji quan zhi sheng xiang wen, min zhi lao si bu xiang wang lai.

A small country with few people. Let there be tools of every kind, but let no one use them. Let the people value their lives and not travel far. Though there are boats and carriages, no one rides them. Though there are weapons and armor, no one displays them. Let the people return to knotting ropes and using them. Let them relish their food, admire their clothing, be content in their homes, and delight in their customs. Neighboring countries may be within sight of one another, the sounds of roosters and dogs may be heard across the border, yet the people may grow old and die without ever visiting one another.

छोटा राष्ट्र हो, थोड़े लोग। दस-सौ प्रकार के यंत्र हों पर उनका प्रयोग न हो; लोग मृत्यु को महत्त्व दें और दूर प्रवास न करें। नावें-रथ हों पर कोई उन पर न चढ़े; शस्त्र-कवच हों पर कोई उन्हें तैनात न करे। लोग पुनः रस्सी में गाँठ लगाकर गिनना आरंभ करें। उन्हें अपना भोजन मधुर लगे, अपने वस्त्र सुंदर लगें, अपना घर शांत लगे, अपनी रीतियाँ आनंदमय लगें। पड़ोसी राष्ट्र परस्पर दृष्टिगोचर हों, मुर्ग-कुत्तों की ध्वनि एक-दूसरे तक सुनाई दे — फिर भी लोग बूढ़े हो कर मर जाएँ और कभी परस्पर न मिलें।
