Verse 1

Austerity, self-study, and surrender to God constitute Kriya Yoga.

Verse 2

Its purpose is to cultivate samadhi and to attenuate the afflictions.

Verse 3

The afflictions are ignorance, egoism, attachment, aversion, and clinging to life.

Verse 4

Ignorance is the field for the others, whether they be dormant, attenuated, intermittent, or fully active.

Verse 5

Ignorance is taking the non-eternal for the eternal, the impure for the pure, the painful for the pleasurable, and the non-Self for the Self.
