Aitareya Upanishad 1.2

स इमाँल्लोकानसृजत | अम्भो मरीचीर्मरमापोऽदोऽम्भः परेण दिवम् | द्यौः प्रतिष्ठा अन्तरिक्षं मरीचयः | पृथिवी मरं या अधस्तात्ता आपः ॥

sa imal lokan asrijata | ambho marichir maram apo'do'mbhah parena divam | dyauh pratishtha antarksham marichayah | prithivi maram ya adhasttat ta apah ||

It created these worlds: the waters above heaven, the luminous regions of the sky, the mortal earth, and the waters below.

उसने इन लोकों की सृष्टि की — द्युलोक के ऊपर की जलराशि (अम्भ), अन्तरिक्ष की मरीचियाँ, मर्त्य पृथ्वी (मर), और उसके नीचे की आपः। द्युलोक प्रतिष्ठा है, अन्तरिक्ष मरीचियाँ हैं, पृथ्वी ही 'मर' है, और जो उसके अधस्तात् हैं वे 'आपः' हैं।
