Verse 1

All tremble at violence; all fear death. Comparing oneself with others, one should not kill nor cause to kill.

Verse 2

All tremble at violence; to all, life is dear. Comparing oneself with others, one should not kill nor cause to kill.

Verse 3

He who harms with violence beings that desire happiness, seeking happiness for himself — after death he will not find happiness.

Verse 4

He who does not harm with violence beings that desire happiness, seeking happiness for himself — after death he will find happiness.

Verse 5

Speak not harshly to anyone; those thus addressed will retort. Painful indeed is aggressive speech, and retaliation may overtake you.
