Dhammapada — Chapter 2: Appamadavagga

12 verses

Verse 1

Heedfulness is the path to the deathless; heedlessness is the path to death. The heedful do not die; the heedless are as if already dead.

Verse 2

Having clearly understood this distinction, the wise rejoice in heedfulness, delighting in the domain of the noble ones.

Verse 3

Those who meditate with perseverance, ever striving with firm effort — those wise ones realize Nibbana, the supreme freedom from bondage.

Verse 4

The glory of one who is energetic, mindful, pure in deed, considerate, self-restrained, righteous in living, and heedful steadily increases.

Verse 5

By effort, heedfulness, restraint, and self-control, the wise one should make an island that no flood can overwhelm.
