Mandukya Upanishad 1.7
नान्तःप्रज्ञं न बहिष्प्रज्ञं नोभयतःप्रज्ञं न प्रज्ञानघनं न प्रज्ञं नाप्रज्ञम् | अदृष्टमव्यवहार्यमग्राह्यमलक्षणमचिन्त्यमव्यपदेश्यमेकात्मप्रत्ययसारं प्रपञ्चोपशमं शान्तं शिवमद्वैतं चतुर्थं मन्यन्ते स आत्मा स विज्ञेयः ॥
nantah-prajnam na bahish-prajnam nobhayatah-prajnam na prajnana-ghanam na prajnam naprajnam | adrishtam avyavaharyam agrahyam alakshanam achintyam avyapadeshyam ekatma-pratyaya-saram prapancho-pashamam shantam shivam advaitam chaturtham manyante sa atma sa vijneyah ||
That which is neither inward-conscious nor outward-conscious nor both, neither a mass of consciousness nor conscious nor unconscious — unseen, beyond empirical dealings, ungraspable, without marks, unthinkable, indescribable, whose essence is the experience of its own Self, in which the world ceases, peaceful, auspicious, non-dual — that they consider the fourth. That is the Self. That is to be known.
जो न अन्तर्मुख चेतना वाला है, न बहिर्मुख चेतना वाला, न दोनों ओर चेतना वाला, न प्रज्ञान का घन, न चेतन, न अचेतन; जो अदृष्ट है, अव्यवहार्य है, अग्राह्य है, अलक्षण है, अचिन्त्य है, अव्यपदेश्य है; जिसका सार अपने ही एकात्मा का अनुभव है, जिसमें प्रपंच का उपशम हो जाता है, जो शान्त है, शिव है, अद्वैत है — उसे ही चतुर्थ मानते हैं। वही आत्मा है। वही जानने योग्य है।
