Mandukya Upanishad 1.8

सोऽयमात्माध्यक्षरमोंकारोऽधिमात्रं पादा मात्रा मात्राश्च पादा अकार उकारो मकार इति ॥

so'yam atmadhyaksharam onkaro'dhimatram pada matra matrash cha pada akara ukaro makara iti ||

This same Self, from the standpoint of the syllable, is Om. From the standpoint of the letters, the quarters are the letters, and the letters are the quarters: A, U, and M.

यही आत्मा, अक्षर की दृष्टि से, ओंकार है। मात्राओं की दृष्टि से, पाद ही मात्राएँ हैं और मात्राएँ ही पाद हैं — अकार, उकार, मकार।
