Yoga Sutras of Patanjali 4.34

पुरुषार्थशून्यानां गुणानां प्रतिप्रसवः कैवल्यं स्वरूपप्रतिष्ठा वा चितिशक्तिरिति ॥

purusha-artha-shunyanam gunanam pratiprasavah kaivalyam svarupa-pratishtha va chiti-shaktir iti

Liberation is the return of the gunas to their origin when they have no further purpose for the Purusha, or it is the establishment of the power of consciousness in its own true nature.

पुरुष के प्रयोजन से शून्य हो चुके गुणों का प्रति-प्रसव (मूल में लौट जाना) ही कैवल्य है; अथवा चिति-शक्ति का अपने स्वरूप में प्रतिष्ठित हो जाना — यही है।
